Obedience

Q. With so many methods of training, how do I know which one is the best for my dog?

A. There are many types of training out there and you should feel comfortable with the information the
trainer is giving you.  You should develop a list of questions about your dog's behavior and general
questions about the training methods and the trainers experience.

Q. Do you train one breed different from another?

A. Not exactly.  Every dog is different and the training may differ for each dog.  Like people they have their
own personalities.  Slight changes in the training to better teach the dog may be needed.

Q. What is a reasonable fee to pay for dog training?

A. You should research what trainers are charging for the same service to get a better idea what is the
going rate.  If you wanted a Board and train service then you should get a few prices on that service.  If
you want In-Home training then you should get prices on this service to compare effectively.

Q. Is there a license to be a dog trainer?

A. No.  This is why it is important to research trainers that you may consider.  Experience is the best but
there are certifications that trainers can get.

Protection

Q. Will protection training make my dog unsafe with my family?

A. Like obedience their are many methods and the right way should not change the dog or make the dog
fearful.

Q. What is defense drive?

A. This is what many trainers use for training protection and police dogs.  The dog views the threat as a
possible attack and this is the reason the dog bites.  Fear is the main drive for the dog to bite.  Thus
making the dog unreliable and unstable.  Defense is just that the dog is defending himself.

Q. What is fight drive?

A. This is where the dog wants the confrontation and bites because he wants to.  The threat is viewed as
a fight when commanded by the handler.  A stable fight drive is ideal in a working dog.

Q. What is the difference between a level 1 protection dog and a level 5 protection dog.

A. Protection is protection for your business or family.  This is a marketing tool.  If you are looking for a
protection dog, you want a dog that is going to keep your family or business safe and still have a great
companion.  The only real difference is price.  Trainers should train all of their dogs to the same high
quality clients are looking for.

Q. What is a reasonable price for a protection dog?

A. Prices range from $1,000.00 - $65,000.  Anything over $10,000 is unreasonable.  If your are looking for
an import it is a little more because the European dollar is worth more than the American dollar.  Still the
base cost is about three to five thousand dollars for the dog and another two to four thousand for training.
$7,500 is a good average not including delivery.  Show or working titles do not add anything you wont
get in good training and will cost you more.

Q. What is the difference between an Imported dog and American dog for protection training?

A. This depends on who you talk to.  You may get lucky with an American bred dog but the chances of
having the right drives isn't as good.  This is a money maker for Americans and Europeans so please be
careful and do some research. Europeans imports have the advantage because they have been bred for
the desirable traits for work over generations.  Again, use caution this may be a business but that doesn't
mean you get what you pay for.  Research is very important.

Q. What kind of guarantee should I be looking for?

A. Any good trainer will back up any of their dogs.  Genetic health and temperament should be in that
guarantee.  Good hips are important and should be X-rayed before you make a purchase and after to be
sure your dog has good hips.  The trainer should understand the temperament and want to make things
right if there are any issues.  You should receive additional support if needed after your purchase.  It
should be evident that the trainer has a great concern, respect and knowledge of the protection dog you
are purchasing.
